Abstract
Identifying and recognising the shapes of the letters in the alphabet is the most fundamental knowledge and skill in reading, which is as translated in the Learning Standard 3.1.1. Some pupils may need more support to achieve this Learning Standard. In this study, there are 4 pupils who are struggling in identifying and recognising the letters in the alphabet. The main reason is that they can’t remember shapes of the letters in the alphabet. The study is conducted using O’Leary Action Research Cycle. The objective of this study is to help all 4 pupils to recognise and say out the letter in the alphabet by using the Alphabet Teller Machine (ATM). The study was conducted in 14 days and the data was collected through observation and simple test. At the end of this study, it was found that 3 out of 4 pupils were able to identify and recognise the letters in the alphabets, even when presented randomly. 1 pupil had very poor attendance (2 out of 14 days). It was concluded that The ATM strengthened pupils’ memory through repetition which is supported by Thorndike’s Law of Exercise.
This innovation and action research has been presented by the researcher, Tan Kan Tsai in Sarawak English Language Education Symposium (SELES) 2022 at Mega Hotel Miri on 17 to 19 October 2022.
