1. Introduction
Lawas Innovator Fair 2026 was successfully held on 19 August 2026 with funding from the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak. The programme was organised by SK Trusan in collaboration with SJKC Chung Hua Trusan, with the valuable support of four external organisations: Chumbaka, Pustaka Sarawak, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), and Realfun Academy.
The programme was initiated by Tan Kan Tsai, Guru Cemerlang DG12 since 2025, with the vision of bringing meaningful science, technology and innovation experiences directly to students in the Lawas area. The programme was inspired by the philosophy:
“If I cannot bring all the students to a Science Fair, I’ll move the Science Fair to the students.”
The fair aimed to allow students to see, experience, explore and be inspired by STEM activities in a fun and engaging environment.
2. Opening Ceremony
The Lawas Innovator Fair 2026 was officially officiated by Ismail bin Sabri, Timbalan PPD Sektor Pembelajaran, acting PPD. The event brought together pupils, teachers, organisers and STEM partners in a collaborative effort to promote innovation and STEM education among primary school students.
3. Major Competitions
Two major competitions were conducted during the programme: Junior Innovate and YCF-YDD STEM 5.
Junior Innovate
A total of 10 teams, each consisting of two primary school students and one teacher, participated in the Junior Innovate competition. The teams represented eight schools:
- SK Trusan
- SJKC Chung Hua Trusan
- SK Ulu Merapok
- SK Agama (MIS) Lawas
- SK Aru Baru
- SK Siang Siang
- SK Puru Sia
- SK Awat Awat
The competition provided students with an opportunity to apply creativity, problem-solving skills, coding knowledge and teamwork in developing innovative projects.
YCF-YDD STEM 5
The YCF-YDD STEM 5 competition featured eight teams from:
- SK Trusan
- SJKC Chung Hua Trusan
- SK Ulu Merapok
- SK Agama (MIS) Lawas
- SK Puru Sia
- SK Awat Awat
- SK Aru Baru
- SK Ladang Baru
The competition encouraged students to apply STEM concepts through project development, creativity and innovation.
4. Science on Wheels by SDEC
SDEC brought its exciting Science on Wheels (SoW) programme to the fair. Students participated in five hands-on stations:
- Sail Car
- Magnetic Small Aircraft
- Hydraulic Shark
- Mars Rover Parachute Model
- READY-SET-LIFT
The activities were designed to make science accessible, interactive and enjoyable. Students were able to explore scientific concepts by experimenting and discovering how things work for themselves. The activities were extremely well received, with many students expressing their hope that Science on Wheels would return in future programmes.
5. Scratch 2.0 Workshop by Realfun Academy
Realfun Academy conducted a Scratch 2.0 workshop for the participating students. Through block-based coding, students learned how to create and animate words and objects in a digital environment.
The workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of programming in a simple and enjoyable way. The knowledge gained from the workshop can serve as an important foundation for students who wish to develop projects for competitions such as Junior Innovate and YCF-YDD STEM 5.
6. STEM Showcase by Pustaka Sarawak
Pustaka Sarawak provided a variety of STEM showcases and interactive activities. Among the most popular activities were the robotic car, STEM puzzles and 3D pen activities.
The 3D printer showcase was particularly meaningful as SK Trusan plans to acquire a 3D printer for students to use in developing and producing their future STEM projects. This exposure allowed students to see how digital technology and 3D printing can be applied to creativity, design and innovation.
7. Impact of the Programme
Lawas Innovator Fair 2026 successfully created a platform for students from different schools to learn, compete, collaborate and explore STEM in a hands-on environment. The programme exposed students to coding, robotics, engineering, science experiments, digital fabrication and innovation.
More importantly, the fair demonstrated that quality STEM experiences can be brought directly to students, regardless of their location. It also strengthened collaboration between schools, government agencies, education organisations and STEM providers.
